Busselton local Eunice Goulding hits the century milestone

Watching your diet is the secret to longevity, according to Busselton woman Eunice Goulding, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Monday.

Ms Goulding had a multitude of celebrations throughout the week with friends and family, including a special celebration with the Busselton Friendship and Learning Group, of which she is a long-time member.

She was born in 1922 in Victoria Park and shared the secret to her longevity.

“I think you are what you eat, and I also think that sugar is a killer,” she said.

“I have some (sugar) now but when I was younger I couldn’t stand anything sweet and I think that’s got a lot to do with me living long…. I don’t care now though, I eat all sorts!”

The festivities were even topped off with a glass of bubbles.

“I had some champagne, which I shouldn’t have because I’m wobbly enough as it is but I don’t care!” she said.

Ms Goulding has a clean bill of health and boasted that despite her age she had never needed glasses and could still thread a needle with no trouble.

She moved to Busselton in 2000 to be with her daughter and granddaughter and was overjoyed to be celebrating with so many friends.

She was grateful for all the love she received on her special day, including letters from the Queen and Prime Minister.

“All the flowers!” she exclaimed.

“Masses and masses of flowers — I’ve got nowhere to put them.”

While Ms Gouling’s family is spread far and wide, with a daughter in Mandurah and another in Queensland, she had no shortage of friends to share the occasion with.

With a decadent carrot cake and a surprise visit by Vasse MLA Libby Mettam, it was clear Ms Goulding had touched the heart of many people in the community.

“Well done Eunice on the wonderful milestone; never stop smiling,” friendship group member Bobbie Scholes, who organised the celebrations, said.
