Bunbury group set to raise the roof

The Bunbury Musical Comedy Group is set to raise the roof on 2021 following a recent announcement from Bunbury MLA Don Punch.

If re-elected next term, Mr Punch has promised the group a new roof.

“What the BMCG is able to achieve as a volunteer organisation is quite amazing, including managing their own community theatre, so I am very pleased to announce an election commitment to provide a replacement roof for the theatre,” Mr Punch said.

“The Lyric Theatre is in need of a new roof, not least of all because when it rains in winter the audience cannot hear the performance over the sound of rain pounding on the tin roof.

“An investment of $24,500 to replace the roof will not only stop the leaks and make the theatre a safer place, it will also vastly improve the experience of Bunbury audiences.”

Bunbury Lyric Theatre president Tony Carey, said without community support the group would have no choice but to close its doors.

“If we don’t do something spectacular then we could be in trouble,” Mr Carey said.

“After a very difficult year, this well help us face the new year with confidence.”

Mr Punch said the past year had been particularly difficult for all performers with their incomes reduced to next to nothing.

“The arts and theatre make such a valuable contribution to the culture and quality of life in our community,” Mr Punch said.

“We can build roads and do all sorts of things with infrastructure, but at the heart of our community is people and if we can, we want to help people connect up.”
