Brisbane Lions captain Dayne Zorko made comment about Melbourne Demon Harrison Petty’s mother in heated clash

The Dayne Zorko sledge that left Harrison Petty distraught mid-game on Friday night was an inappropriate jibe relating to the Melbourne defender’s mother.

Petty was left in tears at the Demons’ three-quarter time huddle and was comforted by coach Simon Goodwin and other staff members at the break, before his side ran out 58 point winners at the Gabba.

The Herald Sun is now reporting the sledge from Zorko was along the lines of: I hope your mother dies.

Zorko has apologised over the incident and the pair spoke as the teams came together in a frosty moment after the final siren. It also sparked a heated discussion between Melbourne football manager Alan Richardson and Brisbane counterpart Danny Daly

The AFL is investigating the incident, but no action has been taken by the AFL Player’s Association.

Brisbane released a club statement on Saturday morning in which Zorko admitted he had acted inappropriately.

“I have apologised to Harrison for the inappropriate comment I made to him last night,” he said.

The AFL will not take any further action against Dayne Zorko or Brisbane Lions in relation to an on-field comment that left Melbourne?s Harrison Petty in tears on Friday night. An emotional Petty was consoled by Melbourne coaches, officials and players during the three quarter-time break after a fracas involving Zorko. Foxfooty.com.au has confirmed the league spoke with both parties and is comfortable with the way both clubs handled the matter in the aftermath, which included apologies from both Zorko and the Lions towards Petty and the Demons.

“I’m remorseful for my actions and take full responsibility for the hurt caused to Harrison, his family and the Melbourne Football Club.

“In reflection, I understand I need to be a better leader, and have spoken with the club who have reinforced this.”

Zorko has been involved in previous incidents with Gold Coast Suns midfielder Touk Miller, with the pair refusing to shake hands after one heated Q Clash incident, before the Lions captain delivered a verbal barrage to Miller in the return fixture.

Brisbane coach Chris Fagan said the frustration of his side’s poor performance might have led to the defender blowing up. Fagan also defended his captain’s leadership tenure.

“He’s very passionate about our footy club and he would have been pretty disappointed at what was unfolding and that might have led to some frustration,” Fagan said.

“I’d like to have a look at some vision to have a real accurate feel about that because whilst his leadership might not have been up to standard tonight … he’s been great for us over the last four or five years.”
