Boston Dynamics robot can now hop and freestyle run

In a video that highlights how close humanity is to sharing the earth with artificial intelligence, Boston Dynamics’ world-famous robot named ‘Atlas’ has showed off its new parkour skills.

Atlas has made headlines on a number of occasions as it progressively learned new skills over its lifetime such as running, picking up objects and even doing a backflip.

In the latest video released by the engineering company, Atlas faultlessly jumps over a log before performing three fluid, one-legged leaps onto three boxes, each one higher than the next.

“The control software uses the whole body including legs, arms and torso, to marshal the energy and strength for jumping over the log and leaping up the steps without breaking its pace,” Boston Dynamics wrote in an explanation accompanying the YouTube Video, which has since been viewed nearly a million times in one day.

“Atlas uses computer vision to locate itself with respect to visible markers on the approach to hit the terrain accurately.”

The US company is working on four different machines with the aim of building “the most advanced robots on Earth, with remarkable mobility, agility, dexterity and speed.”
