Boddington player George Wessels stars in South Fremantle’s first-up reserves win in new WAFL season

Boddington junior George Wessels put in an outstanding performance in the South Fremantle reserves team as the Bulldogs dismantled Subiaco in their opening fixture of the WAFL season at Leederville Oval on Saturday.

Wessels and the Bulldogs were relentless in their attack on the football as they ran out 57-point winners on the day.

The opening quarter looked to promise an entertaining affair as the Bulldogs went back and forth with the Lions who trailed by a mere 10 points at the first break.

But the Bulldogs came out of the break energised, booting 12 of the last 17 goals for the game to finish winners 15.12 (102) to 7.3 (45).

Wessels proved to be a headache for the Lions all day, finishing with 20 disposals and capping off a fine performance with two goals from midfield.

Kukerin-Dumbleyung young gun Jarrad Doney formed a great partnership with Wessels in the middle of the ground, laying six tackles to go with his 23 disposals.

Wagin product Nathan Spooner also finished with eight disposals, two marks and one tackle in the win.

In the South Fremantle colts match, Williams junior Rudy Webster was named in the best players after finishing with six disposals and four tackles in their 5.15 (45) to 14.13 (97) loss to the Lions.
