Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s Sean Abbott at the SCG.
The Sydney Sixers star has taken an absolute blinder to dismiss Brisbane Heat power hitter Chris Lynn, as the wicket wizard pulled out his bag of tricks at the SCG.
Lynn, the BBL’s all-time leading run-scorer, had scored an uncharacteristic 2 from 5 balls when he smoked a Ben Dwarshuis delivery to the tournament’s all-time leading wicket-taker in Abbott.
The fast bowler was horizontal to the turf as he plucked the ball mid-air at full stretch as it sailed in pursuit of the rope, before taking off in celebration – his Sixers’ teammates unable to grab a hold of him.
“Well I thought Fraser McGurk at Marvel (Stadium) was a great catch but I think that’s better,” Brendon Julian said on Fox Cricket.
“That’s the catch of the summer,” fellow commentator Brett Lee agreed.
Jake Fraser-McGurk’s unbelievable catch on the boundary rope to dismiss the dangerous Jake Weatherald had been touted as the best grab of the BBL so far, with the Melbourne Renegade youngster leaping to a ridiculous height to also save a six.
But the speed at which the ball sailed to the covers and the difficulty under the shadows of the SCG grandstand gives Abbott a case for the title.
The catch sent Lynn back to the sheds for his smallest total in BBL11, one outing after the Heat star scored a half century (57) off 34 balls against the Melbourne Stars.
It wasn’t the first wicket of the night Abbott was involved in, with the quick knocking over Sam Cooper’s off stump in his first over.
After his screamer, Abbott returned from the skies to his bowling end at the SCG to snare another wicket.
Ben Duckett (21 from 19) hit a slower ball from the pace ace straight up into the air in the first ball of his second over to put the Heat in all sorts of trouble at 5-41.
