BBL11: Ben McDermott edges out Perth Scorchers star Mitch Marsh for Player of the Tournament

Hobart Hurricanes opener Ben McDermott has been named Player for the Tournament for the 2021-22 Big Bash season, with Mitch Marsh just missing out despite only featuring in half the matches.

In and out of the Scorchers squad with international duties for both the T20 World Cup and the final two Ashes Tests, Marsh received 21 votes to finish equal-fourth in the voting alongside Adelaide’s Matt Short.

Marsh played seven out of Perth’s 14 clashes. By comparison, McDermott, Maxwell, Clarke all featured in 13 games each while Short did not miss a match.

He was deemed Player of the Match on four occasions – more than any other player – scoring 342 runs with a strike rate of 147.41.

His highest score was an unbeaten century against the Hurricanes.

McDermott, the Golden Cap winner, scored a tournament-high 577 runs during BBL11, including back-to-back centuries in December – the first ever Big Bash player to achieve the feat.

He becomes the fourth Hurricane to be named the tournament’s best, after Ben Dunk in BBL3 and WA’s D’Arcy Short in BBL07 and BBL08.

McDermott received 25 votes, finishing three votes clear of Melbourne Stars duo Glenn Maxwell and Joe Clarke.

Scorchers opener Kurtis Patterson was the other Perth representative, finishing equal 10th spot with 14 votes alongside Australia’s T20 skipper and Melbourne Renegades star Aaron Finch.

Patterson was snubbed for BBL11’s official Team of the Tournament, announced on Monday, despite an impressive BBL11 that saw him score 390 runs at a strike rate of 143.91 – including four half-centuries.

Scorchers’ all-time leading wicket-taker Andrew Tye was rewarded for his campaign, while Marsh also featured in the XI.
