Bayern set up title decider with Dortmund

Bundesliga leaders Bayern Munich have secured a 3-0 win against Arminia Bielefeld and set up a title decider against second-placed Borussia Dortmund next week.

With the victory on Sunday, Bayern restored their nine-point lead over Dortmund, who thrashed VfL Wolfsburg 6-1 on Saturday, and could clinch their 10th consecutive league title with a win against the rivals next Saturday.

Bayern shook off the Champions League elimination to Villarreal mid-week and broke the deadlock thanks to an own goal by Jacob Laursen.

A super pass from Joshua Kimmich found Alphonso Davies, who then squared it for Robert Lewandowski. The Pole aimed for the ball, but Laursen helped out with the final touch.

The Bavarians failed to capitalise on further chances, while Bielefeld had a goal denied when Masaya Okugawa was caught offside by millimetres.

Manuel Neuer made a big save to keep Bayern ahead before Serge Gnabry added a second shortly before the break.

Kimmich played another stunning ball over the top for Gnabry, who hit a brilliant first-time volley into the corner. The goal was confirmed after video review for a possible offside.

Bielefeld had some good moments in the second half, but a late goal by Jamal Musiala sealed the win for Bayern.

“We had a very good first half, lost a bit of pace in the second half, but it was still a deserved win,” Kimmich told broadcasters DAZN.

The defender recognised that just the Bundesliga title “is maybe too little” after eliminations in the Champions League and the German Cup.

“But we definitely want to clinch the league title, if possible next week at home against Dortmund,” Kimmich said.

Asked about the squad situation for next season and the transfer plans, coach Julian Nagelsmann said he had his “own ideas” but that was being discussed internally.

Gnabry, who as well as Lewandowski, Thomas Muller and Neuer, has a contract until June 2023, said there was “nothing new” about a possible extension.

Later on Sunday, Eintracht Frankfurt visit Union Berlin, Hoffenheim host Greuther Furth, and Bayer Leverkusen welcome RB Leipzig.
