Avs coach Jared Bednar shaken by Saskatchewan junior team bus accident

Avalanche coach Jared Bednar, the son of a Royal Canadian Mounted Police officer in Saskatchewan, Canada, was born in Yorktown, Sask., but grew up in nearby Humboldt.

Bednar was on the verge of tears Saturday morning when asked about the bus accident Friday night involving the Humboldt Broncos of the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League.

The crash resulted in 14 deaths and 14 more injuries, according to police, and the head coach and team captain were reported to be dead.

“That’s my hometown, eh? So I grew up in Humboldt. My dad was stationed there twice,” Bednar said at the end of his morning skate news conference. “The bulk of my childhood was in that city. I grew up as a young guy dreaming to play for the Broncos and then had the opportunity as a teenager, (but) moved on to the Western League (major-junior).

“I know what that team means to that town. I have a couple friends — one of their sons is a goaltender for the Broncos — and he survived. He went to surgery last night in Saskatoon and hopefully he’s doing better. But it’s a tough time for that town. It’s a tight-knit community; it’s only 6,000 people. Yeah, we send our thoughts and prayers to them for sure.”
