Austrian sailor fortunate to be alive after sea rescue off WA coast

A European sailor has been rescued off the WA coast after his boat capsized while travelling from Indonesia to Perth.

The Austrian man activated multiple distress alerts after his 11m catamaran capsized about 60 nautical mile west of Kalbarri.

The rescue was co-ordinated by Australian Maritime Safety Authority, who tasked their Perth-based Challenger rescue aircraft and a Pearce-based RAAF rescue helicopter to assist.

AMSA’s Response Centre also asked a nearby Marshall Islands registered bulk carrier to divert to the area and conduct a search.

The man was found by the bulk carrier MV SEAPEARL, whose crew released a tender to retrieve the solo traveller in “very challenging” weather conditions.

The man didn’t require any medical attention once on board.

Weather prevented the ship from travelling to Australian shores.

It’s expected to dock in Singapore with the man.
