Austria virus tests to allow free movement

Austria will start a new lockdown phase next week but citizens can earn movement privileges after three weeks if they get tested for the coronavirus, the government has announced.

People who take part in mass screenings in mid-January will be allowed to meet people from other households and to go shopping while others will have to obey lockdown rules for an additional week until January 24, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz told a press conference on Friday.

Those who do not get tested will be allowed to go to work or to shop for essential items but they will have to wear higher-grade protective masks while tested people can wear simple face covers.

The government decided to close non-essential shops and to impose a partial curfew on December 26 as coronavirus infection numbers have been stagnating instead of dropping in recent days.
