Aussie water polo teams win at worlds

Australia’s water polo teams have banked comprehensive victories in their opening games at the world championships in Budapest.

Australia’s men’s outfit trumped Kazakhstan 10-4 while the women thumped the Kazakhs 16-9 in their respective opening group games.

The victory of the men’s team was highlighted by three goals each from Nathan Power and Luke Pavillard.

The team featured nine players making their world championships debut.

The fixture was also the first world title game at the helm for coach Tim Hamill.

“With so many players on debut, there were a few nerves before the game,” Hamill said.

“Pleasingly, our defence in the first quarter set up a solid performance for us … and everyone managed to get minutes which is important at this stage of the tournament.”

In the Australian women’s victory, captain Zoe Arancini dominated with five goals in a player of the match performance with the Stingers racing to a commanding 15-2 lead at halftime.

Tokyo Olympians Bronte Halligan, Abby Andrews and Tilly Kearns all scored three goals and Lena Mihailovic found the net twice.

The men’s team meet Olympic champions Serbia and the United States in their other group games while the women’s team are also grouped with New Zealand and Brazil.
