At Least 3 Die After Boat Overturns Near San Diego

At least three people died and more than two dozen others were hospitalized after a boat overturned off the coast of San Diego on Sunday morning, the authorities said.

The San Diego Fire Department said that 30 people had been rescued from the water. Three people who were rescued died at the scene, and the other 27 were taken to hospitals. It was not immediately clear if anyone else was unaccounted for. The Fire Department said on Sunday afternoon that rescuers were continuing to search the water in the area where the boat had capsized.

The accident was first reported around 10:30 local time near Point Loma, a peninsula that separates the Pacific Ocean and San Diego Bay. Later reports gave a more precise location near the Cabrillo National Monument, at the peninsula’s southern tip.

It was not immediately clear where the boat had sailed from or what its destination was.

San Diego firefighters, San Diego lifeguards and federal agencies, including U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard, assisted in the rescue effort.
