Ashes 2021-22: Australian great Ricky Ponting backs Jhye Richardson as next pace bowler in for Adelaide Test

Australian cricket great Ricky Ponting has backed WA speedster Jhye Richardson to get the nod ahead of Queensland seamer Michael Neser should Josh Hazlewood be unavailable for the second Ashes Test in Adelaide starting Thursday.

Hazlewood bowled just 14 overs in the third innings of Australia’s nine-wicket win over England at the Gabba, nursing a reported rib injury which has him needing to prove his fitness for the first pink ball Test of the summer.

Richardson, who is part of the Australian squad, is seemingly the next cab off the rank but Neser put his best foot forward with a five-wicket haul for Australia A against the English Lions at Brisbane’s Ian Healy Oval earlier this week.
