Newman students have celebrated indigenous history and culture in Australia by commemorating National Reconciliation Week with a school mural.

Students at Newman Senior High School gathered to produce the artwork as part of the week to foster reconciliation discussion and activities around this year’s theme, Don’t Keep History A Mystery.

Newman Senior High School deputy principal Mary Duggan said the program was a good way to raise awareness and engage students in the thinking and oral language skills of the humanities curriculum.

“After looking into the significance of the two dates, May 27 and June 3, and learning about this year’s theme, stud-ents in Years 8-10 humanities spent some time tracing their own hands and cutting them out to create a mural,” she said.

“Students engaged in discussion about the theme of reconciliation and thought about perspectives and historical and contemporary contexts.”
