Arson suspected after fire causes $100,000 damage to Subiaco bar

Adultshop boss Malcolm Day says a fire which caused minor damage to his Subiaco bar could have been much worse, with those responsible trying to throw Molotov cocktails after breaking in.

Arson Squad officers are investigating the deliberately lit fire at Subiaco’s Voyeur Bar, which set off an alarm about 4.20am today.

The club, on the corner of Hay Street and Rokeby Road, is co-owned by Mr Day and Russian-born internet entrepreneur Zhenya Tsvetnenko and used to be the Llama Bar, but was opened as Voyeur Bar in 2016.

“They smashed in the (glass) back door, they’ve gone up the stairs to try and get into the office,” Mr Day said at the scene this morning.

“And then they’ve burnt a few things as well and they’ve had a jerry can and had a couple of Molotov cocktails which they’ve used with some spirits apparently, bottles of Jim Beam.

“They got into one office, but not the second.”

Mr Day said he was confident the incident would have been captured on the CCTV cameras, and that the damage was so minimal that the venue should be able to trade tonight. Voyeur was not open last night.

Although the Department of Fire and Emergency Services put an early damage estimate of $100,000, Mr Day said his best guess would be less than $5000.

“It’s a glass door, some cleaning and some lino which is burnt and two bits of furniture,” he said. “It’s pretty lame really.”

Arson Squad officers were at the scene this morning and will be examining security footage.

Two crews with eight firefighters were called to extinguish the blaze.
