Alleged prison escapee Darko Desic hands himself in to police after 29 years

A man who allegedly escaped a NSW prison almost 30 years ago by using a hacksaw blade and bolt cutters has handed himself in to police.

Darko Desic, then 35, had served a little more than a year of his three and a half year sentence when he allegedly escaped Grafton Gaol on the north coast in the early hours of August 1, 1992.

He had initially been charged with two counts of cultivating a prohibited plant.

Efforts to find him were unsuccessful.

Almost three decades on, the now 64-year-old handed himself into Dee Why Police Station on Sunday morning.

Desic has been charged with escaping from lawful custody.

It’s believed he had been living a quiet life on Sydney’s northern beaches for the last 29 years.

He was formally refused bail in Central Local Court on Tuesday and will reappear on September 28.
