Respected analyst Garry Lyon has warned Fremantle not to get “too cute” while attempting to get key forward Jesse Hogan out of Melbourne.
Hogan toured the Dockers’ facility last week before going on a holiday and is understood to have passed a medical at the club after injuring his foot late in the season.
The football industry expects Hogan to be playing in purple next season, but there have been rumours about the club cooling on the prospect of recruiting the goal-kicker this off-season given the Demons will be asking for a top-10 pick as the start of any deal.
Speaking on SEN on Thursday, Lyon, a former captain of Melbourne, said the Dockers couldn’t afford to miss out on the 71-game, 152-goal key forward after so many failed attempts at recruiting for the same the position.

“If I’m Fremantle, they have tried at various stages over the journey, Mitch Clark, Travis Cloke, Jarrad Waite, Jay Schulz, Cale Hooker… now they’ve got a chance to maybe get a Jesse Hogan into the club with Rory Lobb,” he said.
“Why would they not grab this with both hands? Don’t be too cute. If you’re Fremantle, don’t be too cute on this.
“Their leading goal kickers have been Cam McCarthy with 25 goals (last year) and this year Michael Walters with 22.
“These are guys who have got raps, but this is Hogan who kicks 40s and 50s and can play for the next eight years.”
The Dockers’ first pick in this years draft as it stands is pick No.11 after a trade with Port Adelaide on Thursday morning.
However they are still a chance of gaining pick No.5 if they decide to do a deal to send Lachie Neale to Brisbane.
