AFL set to announce October 24 as 2020 Grand Final date – same as Cox Plate Day

The AFL is understood to have settled on October 24 for this year’s grand final — but the location remains a mystery.

South Australia has joined the race to host the prestigious event. Adelaide Oval will battle Perth’s Optus Stadium and Brisbane’s Gabba for the rights due to Melbourne’s ongoing COVID-19 crisis.

HOW NRL WILL CRIPPLE SYDNEY’S CHANCES OF AFL GRAND FINAL

The weekend believed to be selected by the AFL for the grand final is set to be packed, with WA’s Telethon pencilled in while Melbourne’s Cox Plate is also scheduled for October 24.

The NRL Grand Final would follow on October 25, making a big sporting weekend.

The decision to lock in October 24 is a win for WA’s grand final bid — it’s the same date Premier Mark McGowan has flagged as the possible start of phase 5 restrictions.

That could mean a capacity crowd of 60,000 at the grand final — plenty more than the proposed 16,000 at the Gabba.
