Finding herself stuck in the rent trap, Gail Morrison decided to take the leap into homebuilding.
Feeling disconnected from the places they had previously called home – constantly relocating and jumping from rental to rental – Ms Morrison and her family decided it was time to build, choosing Byford as the place to put down roots.
Tasking Homebuyers Centre to build her dream, coastal-themed home, Ms Morrison let New Homes in on the experience.
What made you decide to build your own home?
I was renting for about a decade and it was very hard, as I had some not-so-nice landlords and tough times with rental inspections. I was also having to pay quite high rent due to COVID-19, so it became financially difficult for me.
For my children, it was hard because they were never able to feel settled or decorate their rooms. We were always having to ask landlords or owners if we could paint a wall or hang a picture. It was important for me to have a place to call mine, not only for myself but for my kids.
What was the initial process like when building?
The initial process was really easy and smooth. I connected with my new home consultant at Homebuyers Centre via an online advertisement. Very quickly he got back to me and was genuinely helpful. We met up for an appointment and started the ball rolling on my homebuilding journey.
Which design did you base your home on and did you make any changes to suit your needs?
I built the Blythe home design, which has three bedrooms, two bathrooms and a great living area. It is the perfect size for my family and I, plus it was within my budget.
We removed the bath from the main bathroom at prestart, as my children are now adults, so they didn’t want to have to step in and out of a bath for their showers each time. Removing the bath gave them a bigger shower recess area.
What is your favourite part of the home?
My favourite part of my home is the living area – it is my sanctuary when I come home. However, once my outdoor entertaining area is complete, it may take over as my favourite place to chill out.
What was the inspiration for your interior and exterior design?
The inspiration for my interior and exterior design was a coastal and a beach theme. I wanted it to look breezy and open, so I went with a coastal theme.
How did you decide Homebuyers Centre was the right builder for you?
Deciding to build with Homebuyers Centre started when a friend of mine, who had built with them, absolutely raved about their build.
After meeting my new home consultant and seeing how helpful he was, I knew it was the right builder for me.
When I experienced the homebuilding journey with Homebuyers Centre myself, I thought ‘these guys know what they’re doing’. There’s not enough gratitude I can express.
Describe your experience with Homebuyers Centre?
Homebuyers Centre was extremely helpful and friendly. The team always made sure I was happy with every step of my building process. My site supervisor was amazing – so helpful and thorough with every part of my build process.
I highly recommend Homebuyers Centre to anyone wanting to get off the rental treadmill.
What is your advice for those choosing to build their first home?
My advice would be to go for it. From my own experience, there are no negatives. There’s no more answering to landlords or homeowners, and I can do what I want with my own home – decorate it or paint it how I like.
When I was renting, in the back of my mind, I knew it wasn’t my home, so I never felt at home. Now I have my own little sanctuary.
