A 40-year-old man has been charged with murder over the death of young mum Kirra-Lea McLoughlin.
The 27-year-old woman was found with a severe head injury after allegedly being assaulted at her Beenham Valley Rd home in Wolvi, 200km north of Brisbane, on July 17, 2014.
She was flown to the Gold Coast University Hospital where she was pronounced dead the following day.
Her death was the subject of a coronial inquest in 2020 and 2021 and has garnered significant public attention as the subject of a popular true crime podcast titled Beenham Valley Road.
Former Queensland police officer and host of the Beenham Valley Road podcast, Jamie Pultz said he was “elated” when he received the news from Kirra’s mother, Alison Kirknes.
“I was in bed with the flu and didn’t sleep last night and Alison sent the message saying, ‘Can I call? It’s very important’.” he told NCA NewsWire.
“I jumped out of bed. I just couldn’t believe what I was hearing.
“It‘s been such a long time coming and I’m honestly just beside myself. So happy.”
Following the inquest, the homicide investigation unit (HIU) reviewed the case and an investigation centre (IC) was established in Gympie.
Additional witnesses were interviewed, previous witnesses were reinterviewed and further expert medical advice was sought relating to the incident.
Following extensive investigations, detectives have arrested a 40-year-old man in Brisbane.
He has been charged with one count of murder and will appear at the Brisbane Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
